I searched far and wide for lists of best medieval movies of all time. These often included myth and fantasy, but with a medieval-like setting. Criteria included the movies being ranked, not just listed, and covering all time, not just a decade. The lists were generally created by groups, whether teams or committees or based on general public voting (like Ranker.com).

I was able to find 25 lists. I took the 25 lists and added all their content into a spreadsheet, noting the rank of every film. The total number was almost 700 including all the repeats. I experimented with different formulas, trying to balance the value of being ranked high on any list and being included on the most lists. I ended up averaging the rankings each movie got (there were 99 that were on at least 2 lists) and dividing that average by a factor of the number of lists that movie was on. The lowest score meant a high ranking average on many lists. The complete spreadsheet is attached at the bottom.

The movies that were on the most lists (out of 25) were:

  • Braveheart (1995) – 20 lists
  • Kingdom of Heaven (2005) – 19 lists
  • Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) – 17 lists
  • Excalibur (1981) – 16 lists
  • A Knight’s Tale (2001) – 16 lists
  • The Seventh Seal (1957) – 14 lists
  • The Name of the Rose (1986) – 14 lists
  • Henry V (1989) – 14 lists
  • The Lion in Winter (1968) – 12 lists
  • Ran (1985) – 12 lists
  • El Cid (1961) – 12 lists
